NJP and Bagdogra to Darjeeling: How to Get There
Travellers heading up to Darjeeling must first cross the plains of North Bengal. The two main transit hubs at the foot of the hills are New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP) and Bagdogra Airport (IXB). Mountain driving conditions are variable, and journey times shift with weather and road repairs, so it helps to have clear routes, vehicle options and fares in hand before you set off.
For rail travellers, NJP and Siliguri Junction are the nearest stations with direct long-distance connections to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Varanasi and other major cities; Bagdogra Airport is the nearest commercial airport.
International visitors need no Inner Line Permit or Protected Area Permit for Darjeeling district itself — unlike neighbouring Sikkim, where a Restricted Area Permit is mandatory for all foreign nationals entering the state.

Travelling from NJP to Darjeeling by Road
New Jalpaiguri railway station sits south of Siliguri and is the main overland rail terminus for the region. A railway-history archive records it as built in the early 1960s on a greenfield site as part of a new broad-gauge line from Calcutta, displacing Siliguri Junction as the area’s main hub; by about 1964, once the narrow-gauge DHR line was extended in, NJP had become a tri-gauge junction, which is why travellers now land here rather than at Siliguri. Outside the station are private taxis, pre-paid counters and shared vehicles onward to Darjeeling.
Road Distance and Driving Times
Sources differ on the exact road distance from NJP to Darjeeling along the Hill Cart Road route, clustering around 70 to 75 km but cited as high as 81 km by darjeeling-tourism.com and 88 km on the official darjeeling.gov.in district site.
By private taxi or reserved car, the drive takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, varying with plains traffic leaving Siliguri, time of day, monsoon conditions and periodic landslides on the hill sections.
Taxi Fares and Shared Jeeps
Reserved taxi fares from NJP to Darjeeling span a wide range. Private car hire costs roughly ₹1,800 to ₹3,500 depending on vehicle size, negotiation, and whether you’re travelling in high or off-season — a pre-paid counter quoted ₹1,860 for a small car and ₹2,400 for a large one, while a separate traveller account cited around ₹3,000 for a small reserved taxi.
For solo and budget travellers, a shared jeep service runs from outside NJP station to Darjeeling. A seat costs approximately ₹250 to ₹300. Shared jeeps carry about 10 passengers and depart only once all seats are sold.
Getting to Darjeeling from Bagdogra Airport
Bagdogra Airport handles domestic flights and sits west of Siliguri, with direct access to the hill roads north. It gained limited international airport status in 2002, with services to Bangkok and Paro in Bhutan.
Distance and Journey Duration
The road distance from Bagdogra Airport to Darjeeling is disputed: most sources give 68 to 70 km (West Bengal Tourism’s own figure is 68 km) against a notably higher 90 km on the official darjeeling.gov.in site; a roughly 40 km aerial straight-line figure also appears but isn’t a road distance.
Driving time runs approximately 2 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours, fastest via Rohini Road and NH110; a Mirik detour can take up to about 4.5 hours. Vehicles on the Rohini Road route pay a small toll — ₹10 for small cars, ₹30 for larger vehicles.
Airport Taxi Fares and Helicopter Clarification
Private or pre-paid taxis from Bagdogra cost approximately ₹1,860 to ₹3,500 depending on car size and negotiation; shared taxi seats run approximately ₹300 to ₹850.
No helicopter service to Darjeeling itself currently operates; a separate Bagdogra-Gangtok service exists but serves Gangtok in Sikkim, not Darjeeling. A proposed heliport at Tiger Hill was not operational as of the latest sourcing.
Transit Options via Siliguri
Siliguri is the main commercial transit city linking plains to hills; travellers at local coach stands or spending time in town can arrange onward transport from here.
Road Distance and Drive Times
Sources differ on the total road distance from Siliguri to Darjeeling too — the official district website gives 77 km via NH55 (now NH110), popularly the Hill Cart Road, while other sources cite 80 km; the road runs via Sukna, Tindharia, Kurseong and Sonada to Ghum. Sukna, first of those towns, is recorded as the gateway to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary (established 1976, about 159 sq km) and given as 13 km from Siliguri, 28 km from Bagdogra Airport.
One common mix-up: the Coronation Bridge over the Teesta at Sevoke, built 1937–1941 and named for the coronation of King George VI, carries NH10 toward Kalimpong and Sikkim — it is not on the Hill Cart Road route into Darjeeling, which never crosses the Teesta.
The standard drive time is about 3 hours by road; by shared jeep it runs 3 to 4 hours because of passenger stops.
Shared Jeeps from Bus Terminals and Siliguri Junction
Shared jeeps to Darjeeling depart from the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus on Hill Cart Road in Siliguri, as well as from Siliguri Junction railway station. These jeeps carry about 10 passengers and depart when full, typically within a 7am to 3pm window, at approximately ₹250 to ₹300 per seat.
Alternative Road Route: The Mirik Detour
Travellers driving from Bagdogra Airport or NJP can choose a longer route via the hill town of Mirik, taking approximately 4 to 4.5 hours in total. It’s a scenic detour rather than a direct corridor, and adds noticeable driving time.
The Toy Train from NJP to Darjeeling
For those who prefer rail over road, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs a daily mountain train service over the full distance. Rail travel here predates the toy train itself — the Darjeeling Mail has run from Sealdah since 1 January 1878, three years before the DHR reached Darjeeling in 1881.
A full-length, diesel-hauled toy train passenger service covers the entire route, departing NJP around 10am and taking approximately 7 to 8 hours to cover roughly 87 to 88 km — not to be confused with the short 1 hour 45 minute Darjeeling-Ghum-Batasia Loop joyride, which starts and finishes locally in Darjeeling town and goes nowhere near NJP.
The fare for the full NJP-Darjeeling service has been cited at approximately ₹1,400 to ₹1,500 for First Class or AC Chair Car — treat this as indicative only and confirm through Indian Railways booking channels before you travel.
Arriving in Darjeeling and Staying at Hotel Apsara
